Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty - Diagram Rhinoplasty is a common operation to change the size or shape of your nose, adjusting it to complement your surrounding facial features. It is important to have a surgeon specializing in nasal surgery, such as Mr. Vik Vijh, perform your rhinoplasty, because you want to be satisfied with the results the first time. If you aren’t pleased with the result, you can always attempt a secondary rhinoplasty, but these are often more difficult and less predictable due to previous scarring.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

During rhinoplasty surgery at our , or other locations, incisions are made inside the nostrils, so the scars will not be visible. In more complex surgeries, an incision may be made at the base of the nose, but even this is rarely visible. The rhinoplasty itself normally lasts only an hour or two. However, it may take longer if another procedure, such as one to improve breathing, is performed at the same time.

Rhinoplasty Risks and Recovery

Generally, you can return home the same day, or the day after the rhinoplasty. The stitches will be removed within four to seven days, and the plaster can be taken off in seven to eleven days. Once this is done, you should be able to return to work. Any bruising that remains at this time should be mild and easy to hide with makeup.

Complications from rhinoplasty are rare, but they can include swelling around the nose, which will subside in time or an be decreased through massage exercises. Nose bleeds or infections are also possible after rhinoplasty, but can easily be corrected. In very rare instances, a minor adjustment is required following the initial surgery. However, you must wait about a year to allow for the scarring to soften and mature before any additional changes are made.

If you are considering rhinoplasty, contact our , or Birmingham office; we will schedule an initial consultation to discuss your expectations and to give you more information on the procedure. If you have further questions or concerns before the rhinoplasty, you may schedule a second meeting with Mr. Vik Vijh at no extra cost. Answers to common questions about rhinoplasty can be found on our cosmetic surgery FAQ page.

Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Correction Surgery)

Otoplasty - DiagramOtoplasty is ear surgery that pins the ears back closer to the head; it is usually performed on individuals whose cartilage did not bend properly during development. Otoplasty is deemed safe once the cartilage in the ear has fully developed. Ear surgery is commonly performed in our Birmingham office on children between the ages of five and 14. However, ear surgery is successful with adults as well.

Ear Surgery Described

Ear surgery takes about an hour per ear, depending on how much correction needs to be made. Most patients can return home the same day as surgery. Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthetic.

A bandage will be applied over the site of the incision and will be removed from the ear, along with any sutures, about seven to ten days after ear surgery. You should be able to return to your normal activities within a week, but you must continue to keep your ears clean and protected for at least six weeks.

Ear Surgery Risks and Recovery

As with any surgery, there are risks involved, though they are rare. Risks include a negative reaction to the anaesthesia, bleeding, infection, and scarring. If an infection occurs, it can deform the ear cartilage. It is also possible for one of the non-dissolving sutures to become loose and work its way to the surface. If this happens following ear surgery, you must return to our Birmingham office where a local anaesthetic will be used while Mr. Vik Vijh removes the suture. Please see our cosmetic surgery FAQ page for more information about otoplasty.
